Rivers and Rails of Africa: Four distinct journeys through southern Africa: Cape Town, a Chobe River safari cruise on the Zambezi Queen, Victoria Falls, and 1,000 miles aboard the legendary Rovos Rail.

Rivers and Rails of Africa

14 Days

Rivers and Rails of Africa is a fourteen-day journey through South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe combining four distinct experiences: three nights in Cape Town, a four-night safari cruise on the Chobe River aboard the Zambezi Queen, two nights at Victoria Falls, and four nights aboard Rovos Rail traveling 1,000 miles from Victoria Falls to Pretoria.

This is the kind of trip that stays with you. It combines four completely different ways of experiencing Africa—each one extraordinary in its own right. You’ll start in Cape Town, spend days on the water watching elephants and lions, stand before one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, and then travel through the heart of southern Africa on a train that feels like stepping back in time.

Your journey begins with three nights in Cape Town, a city that’s hard to describe without sounding like you’re overselling it. Table Mountain looms over everything. The beaches are pristine. The food scene is incredible. You’ll explore the Cape of Good Hope, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, and visit Boulders Beach to see thousands of African penguins. One day, you’ll choose between visiting the Cape Winelands—where some of South Africa’s best vineyards are tucked into valleys—or taking a ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Both experiences are powerful in completely different ways.

From Cape Town, you’ll fly to Victoria Falls and transfer to the Zambezi Queen, a ship designed specifically for wildlife viewing on the Chobe River. This is where the trip shifts. You’re not just seeing Africa—you’re in it. Morning boat safaris bring you face-to-face with elephants splashing in the water, hippos, and crocodiles. Afternoons might mean another boat safari, bird watching, or fishing. One day, you’ll spend a full day in Chobe National Park in open-top 4x4 vehicles, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebras, and lions. You’ll have lunch under the trees, surrounded by the sounds of the bush.

You’ll also visit a local African village, spending time with the children and elders. These moments—the ones that aren’t about wildlife or scenery—are often the ones people remember most. Your last evening on the Zambezi Queen ends with an African-themed dinner, and then you’ll transfer to Victoria Falls for two nights.

Victoria Falls is one of those places that lives up to the hype. A local guide will take you through the falls, explaining the history and the unique ecosystem. You’ll have time to explore on your own, and one evening, you’ll board a vintage steam train for a cocktail reception and dinner, watching the sunset over the falls from the Victoria Falls Bridge. Another evening brings a private sunset cruise on the Zambezi River with drinks and tapas, followed by dinner with live local entertainment.

Then comes the Rovos Rail. This is the part of the trip that feels like a different era. You’ll board at the colonial-era Victoria Falls station and spend four nights traveling 1,000 miles through Zimbabwe and into South Africa. The train itself is a destination—think five-star cuisine, excellent South African wines, observation cars, and suites that feel more like hotel rooms. But it’s also your way to see parts of Africa you wouldn’t see otherwise.

One morning, you’ll take a safari in Hwange Game Reserve, Zimbabwe’s largest national park. The elephants here are world-famous—the park has one of the largest elephant populations in the world. You’ll return to the train for brunch as you travel through the vast landscapes of central Zimbabwe. You’ll stop in villages, cross the Limpopo River into South Africa, visit the Polokwane Nature Reserve to see white rhinos, and cross the Tropic of Capricorn. The journey ends in Pretoria, where you’ll transfer to Johannesburg for your flight home.

This isn’t a trip you plan yourself. The logistics alone—coordinating flights, transfers, river cruises, train schedules, and safari bookings across four countries—would be overwhelming. But when it all comes together, it’s seamless. You’re in Cape Town, then you’re on the water watching elephants, then you’re at Victoria Falls, then you’re on a train watching the African landscape roll by. Each part builds on the last, creating an experience that’s impossible to replicate.
