Renew Your Passport Online: Everything You Need to Know

The Department of State has launched a fully operational online passport renewal system, enabling travelers to renew their passports without leaving home. Initially introduced as a pilot in 2022, this system eliminates the need to print and mail a renewal application, offering a more convenient alternative.
“By offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to offer the most efficient and convenient passport renewal experience possible,” the State Department stated. Efforts are focused on reducing administrative barriers and improving accessibility throughout the passport application process.
Travelers are eligible for online renewal if they are at least 25 years old, reside in a U.S. state or territory, and possess a passport issued between nine and 15 years ago. Applicants must also have the old passport and must not plan to change their name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth.
Online renewals follow routine processing times, so applicants should not plan travel for at least eight weeks after submission. Expedited service is unavailable for online renewals.
To renew online, travelers need to create an account, input their details, upload a .jpg digital photo, and pay fees using a credit or debit card. Passport photos must feature a plain, off-white background, and selfies are not permitted.
Routine processing takes six to eight weeks, while expedited service, costing an additional $60, takes two to three weeks. However, expedited service is only available for mail-in applications.
